First Christmas!

I have not been keeping up my blogging. We had 1st Christmas with my oldest son and his family this week-end, so I have a breather before real Christmas. I should be working on cards and wrapping today! Leftover smoked turkey from the BBQ Barn in Minco is on the menu today. Yummy!

We had an abrubt change in temperatures yesterday. 62 degrees when we left church to eat lunch, and 46 by the time we got home. Brrr! 15 this morning!! I have never lost any daylilies to the cold, but it is so dry here I hope we don't lose any plants.

These are poppies from a friends garden this past May. She shared seeds and I scattered them about 3 weeks ago. I hope mine look this good!
Think Spring!!!

This is my deciduous azalea, from last April. Evergreen azaleas in the background. There are some new buds formed, sometimes they get frozen and I don't have many blooms.

This is the beauty berry today, a few berries are hanging on. I still love it.

FIRST FREEZE!!!!

Sigh!!! We had our first freeze last night, it wasn't predicted until tonight. I took a few pictures of the last blooms of Fall, this weekend. Hope you like them.

In the last week the leaves have started to change on the Chinese Pistache 'Pistacia chinensis' http://aggie-horticulture.tamu.edu/cemap/Pistache/pistache.html. A great tree for Oklahoma, I think we have 4, but they don't all have the beautiful fall color that this one does.

Our small town was given a truckload of plants and residents could pick them up. By the time I arrived there were only 2 varieties to choose from, but I did get 3 "Pink Velour" Crepe Myrtle Plants. I already had one, this photo is not great but you can see the flower color, plus the leaves are a beautiful dark purpley color. We planted those Saturday.

This is a small Reblooming Iris 'St. Petersburg'. This is only the second bloom for fall, I don't know if the weather will let it bloom again or not. The reblooms usually do get clipped by frost. It's lovely in spring, too.

This is Red Castor Bean, it never did get large enough to flower, a local friend I met through Yahoo Groups for Oklahoma Gardening was kind enough to give me some seeds, so maybe next year! Behind is Artemesia 'Powis Castle' an Oklahoma Proven plant http://www.ogga.org/okproven.htm.
Mine needs a serious haircut, but from what I read I must wait until spring.

I planted this little ground cover under the 'Pink Velour' Crepe Myrtle. I didn't know what it was when I bought it, but it was very cute. I found it's name on another blog! I planted a small 6 pack and it's grown to a 4' x 2' area, hope it's not invasive here. This is what Hayefield House http://hayefieldhouse.com/2008/10/ called it..

Drumstick or Breast?

Fall is in the air and for the last two days we have had wild turkeys on our property. I'm not a hunter but I did shoot a few pictures, there were a little too far away for a close-up, so here is a cropped shot. My husband counted 9 hens and 1 young male, no beard yet. I don't know how he could see the difference.

It appeared they were eating insects at first but then I saw them eating the dark blue berries of our Rusty Blackhaw Treees "Viburnum rufidulum Raf." http://plants.usda.gov/java/profile?symbol=VIRU It is a wonderful wildlife plant.

I don't usually see birds eating the berries until we've had a couple of freezes. But here are a few species that I have seen eating are Eastern Bluebirds, Cedar Waxwings, Robins, Brown Thrashers, Mockingbirds (we usually have one that guards the trees and doesn't like to share!). Now I can add wild turkey to that list.

Skye, yes the Beautyberry grows in OKC area. I think I have seen them at garden centers. Mine was planted by the birds, and placed just right! After 3 years I did have quite a few seedlings come up this year, but it wasn't hard to pull them up.

Lazy Day

I have been exploring other blogs today! If I'm going to keep this up, I have alot to learn. Adding these little "extras" on the sides, well that is a new one. It's colder this morning and we received a much needed 1/2" of rain. Yeah for rain!

The American Beautyberry 'callicarpa americana' is looking great!

We have one Redbud that looses it's leaves at the first sign of the 50's. I don't know why, the other one we have still has most all of it's green leaves.

This weekend was my youngest daughter's 20th birthday. Hard to believe. Part of the family was hear Sunday to celebrate. I used my mother's cakestand. She got it as gift from her Grandma on Mom's 16th birthday. I think it's American Fostoria. I'll try to add a photo.

One of my grandsons was here too. He's 15 months and sooooo cute! He's a keeper, well they all are.

It's been busy since TRADEMART started! I have completed trades with 4 new people and 1 that I've traded with before. It sure kept me busy, digging, dividing and replanting. I ended up moving a few plants so I could place newer more desired cultivars in their spots. I do love to trade with fellow addicts. I have added 13 new cultivars this fall through TRADEMART. 4 through trades with my local friend. I bought 2 at Club "Auction for Members" plus won a doorprise plant at that meeting. Plus I bought more than I intended at our fall sale in September. Total fall additions well....I'll have to count them!
